Blood In Semen

Blood in semen, or hematospermia, is relatively common and rarely serious. Semen may appear pink, red, or dark brown. It may be microscopic, and therefore undetectable by the person. It may be caused by inflammation, infection, blockage, or injury. The most common cause is inflammation of the seminal vesicles or prostate gland. Urethritis, which is the inflammation of the urethra, can cause it.

Certain diseases, such as tuberculosis, prostate cancer, and HIV, can cause blood in semen. Bleeding disorders can cause blood in semen. Prostate stones can cause it. It can be the result of parasitic worms.

Cysts in the prostate, urethra, or seminal vesicles may cause blood in semen. Widened veins or capillaries of the prostate may cause it. Medical procedures, such as prostate biopsies may cause blood in semen. High blood pressure is a contributing factor.

Blood in semen usually goes away without treatment. A doctor should be consulted if it persists since it can indicate a serious medical condition. Tell your doctor about any pain, swelling, or tenderness. Treatment will depend on the cause. The doctor will most likely collect a urine sample and physical examination. Blood tests and semen analysis may be ordered.
