Blepharitis
Blepharitis is an infection of the eyelids caused by an excessive amount of bacteria that is normally on the skin. Blepharitis causes the eyelids to become swollen and red. It causes the skin at the base of the eyelashes to become scaly, which can irritate the eye. If the eye becomes irritated, it may produce crusts, which may cause the eyelids to stick together after the person sleeps.
Blepharitis may cause a burning sensation or feeling like there is something in your eye. It can also cause blurry vision, sensitivity to light, and dry eyes. There is no cure for blepharitis.
Outbreaks can be treated and future outbreaks prevented by using proper hygiene. All eye make up should be removed before sleeping. No make up should be worn around the eyes while you have blepharitis. Any liquid make up worn right before or during the infection should be discarded, because it could have been contaminated.
Care should be used to keep dirt away from your eyes. One simple way to prevent contact with dirt is to avoid wiping or rubbing your eyes without washing your hands first. If blepharitis is left untreated, it can cause serious injury to eye tissue.
