Amniocentesis
Amniocentesis is a test during which a small amount of amniotic fluid is collected and analyzed. It is commonly used to detect birth defects. The doctor can use this test to check for over a hundred different birth defects.
Amniotic fluid collected by the amniocentesis can be used to determine the sex of the baby. This is especially important if there is a family history of a genetic birth defect or disease that occurs in only males or only females. An amniocentesis can also be used to determine if the baby’s lungs are mature enough for an early delivery.
In cases where the blood of the mother and baby are incompatible, an amniocentesis can be used to evaluate the level of sensitivity. It can also allow the doctor to check the amniotic fluid to make sure it isn’t infected.
Before an amniocentesis, the doctor will use an ultrasound to determine the location of the placenta and the position of the baby. Using the ultrasound as a guide, the doctor will insert a needle through the abdomen of the mother and into her uterus. There is a slight chance that an amniocentesis can trigger premature labor or cause a miscarriage.
